What is an ATA Carnet?
An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows you to temporarily take goods out of the UK and into other countries (and back again) without paying import duties and taxes at each border - provided the goods return and the carnet is used correctly.
If you’re shipping professional equipment for a short period - such as a trade show stand, film and TV kit, touring gear or commercial samples - an ATA Carnet is often the simplest and most widely recognised option.
When do you need an ATA Carnet?
You may need an ATA Carnet if you’re:
-
Attending an exhibition or trade show overseas
-
Moving film, TV or media equipment across borders
-
Touring with music or live event equipment
-
Taking commercial samples for sales meetings or demos
-
Temporarily exporting tools or specialist equipment for a job
Not every country and situation requires an ATA Carnet - we’ll advise on whether it’s the right route, or whether a temporary export procedure is more suitable.
What goods can travel under an ATA Carnet?
Common categories include:
-
Camera, lighting and audio equipment
-
Exhibition materials, demo units and display stands
-
Musical instruments, staging and touring production gear
-
Specialist tools and technical equipment
-
Commercial samples and prototypes

The carnet relies on a clear goods list (descriptions, serial numbers, values). We help you build this properly to avoid border delays.
How the ATA Carnet process works
Steps:
-
Quick eligibility check – where it’s going, what it is, when it returns
-
Goods list creation – descriptions, values, serial numbers, quantities
-
Carnet preparation – paperwork prepared and checked for accuracy
-
Issue & collection / delivery – you receive the carnet ready to travel
-
Using the carnet at borders – guidance on stamps/validation
-
Return & close-out – ensure correct re-import and completion
If you’re on a tight deadline, see our Urgent ATA Carnet services >
How long does an ATA Carnet take?
Timing depends on the quality of the goods list, destination countries and how quickly details can be confirmed. In many cases, once we have complete information, the process can move quickly - and urgent options are available when time is critical.
